Pregnancy and Birth Services
Our Women-Centred Model of Care
Since mid-2013, in conjunction with independent midwife, Martina Gorner we have been developing a women-centred, integrated model of care aimed at supporting women seeking no- to low-intervention approaches before, during, and after pregnancy.
Our birth service incorporates three AHPRA registered modalities:
- Traditional Chinese Medicine: acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine
- Obstetric care
The model is midwifery coordinated, not midwifery-led with input ranging from a complementary and alternative approach to mainstream obstetric management, giving women options from both worlds before, during, and after their pregnancy.
Referral into our model can come from one or all of these modalities.
We find this combination of modalities links perfectly to provide women with flexible treatment options based on the most up-to-date independent and evidence-based information.
How our model works
In our model, your pregnancy and birth care will be primarily coordinated by Martina and her team of independent midwives.
At significant points during your pregnancy, such as when you experience normal yet uncomfortable symptoms related to pregnancy or when you are approaching and preparing for birth, the Ten Moons midwifes may recommend Chinese medicine at our clinic.
Our clinic has experience working with Ten Moons and their home birth women and will provide complimentary and/or alternative Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine care as required.
Things don’t always go to plan.
If your pregnancy is complicated or becomes complex, or an urgent situation requiring obstetric involvement arises, you will be referred to our private collaborating obstetrician for obstetric review and an appropriate plan for care decided upon. They will work in conjunction with you, your family and your whole care team. when choosing this model your continuity of care remains unbroken with your known care providers.
How we work together
As independent practitioners we work as an integrated team. We know and respect the skills and scope of each other’s practice. We have established pathways for sharing important clinical information between modalities and this helps to ensure that you don’t fall through the cracks.
Integration between the modalities, knowledge of each modality’s relative strengths and limitations, and when and why a certain approach would be best indicated is enlightened, intelligent medicine and gives us more flexibility to present appropriate, creative and thoughtful solutions outside of our individual scope of practice.
While we work collaboratively we maintain our professional objectivity by also working independently. This helps to promote vibrant case discussion and ensures that our combined treatment(s) are tailored to meet you and your circumstances rather than expecting you to fit our treatment(s).
